Interdisciplinary Connections are Key at the Bellarmine Dept. of Environmental Studies

In November 2020, the Bellarmine University Department of Environmental Studies joined Kentucky IPL’s partner community program as a Green Spirit partner. The Department of Environmental Studies was the first program in Louisville to provide a bachelor's degree in environmental studies. The Department leads campus-wide initiatives in environmental sustainability, provides a home for faculty research in environmental science, runs the Terra first-year learning community, and directs the Bellarmine University Farm.

Bits & Pieces

  • March 4-6: In the Footsteps of Migrants.  Cobb Leadership Series presents this 2-day virtual gathering, wherein we will explore the intersection of climate change, migration and theology. Through stories, photographs, art, and reflection we will think about why migration is not just a human right, but a theological mandate, especially as we reckon with our Western impact on the earth. Registration is on a sliding scale.

  • March 6, 10am ET: Butterfly Garden Workshop. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth invite you to join in learning about locally native wildflowers and how you can create a pollinator habitat in your own yard or community.  Email Julia Gerwe at jgerwe@scnky.org to register and get the Zoom link.

  • March 10, 3pm ET:  Getting to Net-Zero at Home. Join the Presbyterian Hunger Program for this webinar featuring Rev. Dr. Patricia Tull, an environmental theologian, A.B. Rhodes Professor Emerita of Hebrew Bible at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, and author of Inhabiting Eden. Using her own net-zero home in Indiana as a model, Trisha will overview some of the promising ways homes can be built or renovated to become efficient enough to power not only themselves but family transportation and food production. Join via zoom at https://buff.ly/2PhOm72

  • March 20, 10am ET: Honoring and Offering: An Earth Reverence Workshop. Drepung Gomang Center for Engaging Compassion invites you to a meditative journey of reciprocity, earth prayer and belonging. Facilitator Jenny Bell will guide you through practical and powerful ways to offer up praise and gratitude for sacred earth with intention and reverence – nurturing nature by being a grateful steward! This workshop includes mindfulness practices that will integrate these experiences and deepen your connection.  More information here.

  • Sundays in April & May: Faith and the Climate Crisis. Presbyterian Climate Advocates is offering this online four-week course for individuals and congregational groups. Classes include videos, reflection, discussion, and enrichment to move from despair to engaged, hopeful, effective action. Read more and register
  • Donation Opportunity:  OurEarthNow is a group of students in Louisville working on environmental solutions. They raised funds and had solar panels installed for Assumption and Presentation in the past and now they want them on Mercy Academy. They've already raised $2,850 so only need $2,150 more to participate in Kentucky IPL's 2Kw for $5k program. Everyone benefits when more solar gets installed! Donate here.
