Sol Searching and Thermostat Theology

Like many churches, First Unitarian Church has been challenged in new ways this year, with budgets and climate change ever in the forefront of our minds. Like many religious communities, when Covid was determined to be a real threat, First Unitarian was forced to hold zoom services and reduce our building use. As a result, a group of church members zoomed to discuss ways to cut costs and one suggestion was to cut back on our energy use.

Plans for 2021

We aren't much for making New Year's Resolutions here at Kentucky IPL, but that doesn't mean we don't have lofty goals for 2021! Watch this space for announcements about some of these exciting programs we have in the works:

  • Connect with faith communities in Eastern, Southern and Northern Kentucky;
  • Expand our 2kw for $5k solar panel program for faith communities & nonprofits;
  • Conduct more interfaith worship services for environment & creation care observances;
  • Entice more faith communities and nonprofits to take advantage of our energy conservation services (ie, audits and consulting);
  • Offer online film discussion series that educate and inspire;
  • Provide eco-grief groups where people can process and share their concern about the state of our planet now and in the future;
  • Create a signature program connecting communities throughout the Commonwealth around creation care and environmental justice issues;
  • Work intentionally through USCAN’s diversity, equity & inclusion self-evaluation.

Bits & Pieces

  • Is your faith community or group one of our partner communities? If so, you have benefits of partnership that you could be taking advantage of! Partner Communities get discounts on speakers, workshops, consultations and energy audits! See our website for more information.
  • Would your congregation or organization like to start becoming more energy efficient?  We can help! Our VISTA member, Audrie, is able to help your faith community or nonprofit find a personalized approach to reducing your energy impact. Not only is this good for the planet, but energy conservation can be good for your bottom line, too! As we enter into the winter season, there are ample opportunities for reducing your energy bill.  Find out more on our Energy Conservation Outreach webpage.

  • The 2021 Kentucky General Assembly starts today! During the legislative season, the Kentucky Conservation Committee (KCC) tracks legislation that falls within their mission and considers what KCC’s position on them should be every week. Positions are determined through a consensus of a body of experts consisting of more than a dozen leaders in land conservation, climate change, biodiversity, energy, political science, environmental issues and more. You can learn what KCC is working on by visiting their website and through their weekly email alerts during the General Assembly. Read more in this week's KCC Guardian
